Scooter Carbs

Cornish Scoots can supply a range of complete carburettors for mopeds and scooters. Labour time spent repairing carburettors for these small engines is often not cost-effective when compared to the cost of our brand new carburettors.

Although not listed on our website, we have access to over 40 carburettors for 2 and 4 stroke engines up to 200cc from Dellorto, Naraku and JMP. These cover a wide range of small machines including many Vespa models, generic Chinese GY6 scooters plus carbs for Aprilia, Derbi, Gileria, Piaggio, Honda, Kymco, Peugeot, Sym and other brands.

If you are in need of a replacement carburettor for your bike, just get in touch and tell us what bike it is and we will come back to you with a product and price.

E10 petrol and your scooter

E10 petrol has now launched and has replaced E5 as the default unleaded petrol offering at all fuel stations in the UK (E5 is now commonly refered to as as Super or Premium – depending on brand)

The difference between the two (apart from cost!) is the ethanol content, E10 contains twice as much ethanol as E5. Increased ethanol content brings up the octane rating of the petrol, which is actually a benefit to the running of the engine.

However, ethanol is also very corrosive and can cause damage to steel fuel tanks, and rubber hoses and fittings. Another big concern is the reduction in fuel economy many users are seeing from E10 fuel.

The purpose of E10 petrol is to reduce CO2 emissions, although any potential benefits could well be off-set by the reduced fuel economy, causing more litres of E10 to be burnt to reach the same number of miles per gallon!

Most modern motorcycles and scooter should run fine on E10 petrol. The Government has launched a E10 vehicle checker where you can enter your vehicle details if you are unsure.

Even if you are able to use E10 petrol, it may be a good idea to choose E5 for the reasons listed above. This may not be possible in many cases, however, as not all fuel stations will carry a Super or Premium petrol.

In this case we would recommend the use of Petrol Additives. These work by inhibiting the corrosive behaviour by joining with any free bonds on the ethanol. The fuel treatments will not affect the beneficial part of ethanol and should be used each time you refuel with E10 petrol.

Whatever petrol you choose (just don’t fill up with diesel!) – happy scootering!

Be Safe scooter theft

be safe scooter 1024

Based in London, The Metropolitan Police Force has recently launched a new campaign asking Londoners to lock, chain and cover their bikes. Over 9,000 scooters, motorcycles and mopeds were stolen in London in the last year.

Nationwide, as in London, a large number of bikes are left without extra security; it takes seconds for a thief to steal a moped, scooter or motorcycle, if unprotected.

Lock, chain, cover

The campaign is asking riders to layer up their security to reduce their vulnerability to thieves, using the strapline: ‘Lock, chain and cover your scooter to make it less visible to thieves. Adding extra security makes it harder for them to steal’.

Here at Cornish Scoots, we supply a range of security devices that will help you protect your scooter or motorbike. Visit the Security section of our website, where you will find everything you need to follow the guidelines set out by the Met Police and protect your pride and joy.

We offer Locks, Chains and Covers from big brands like Squire, Ardi & X-Gear. All quality products at great prices!

Motorcycle Security – How much should you spend?

squire

Prompted by an article in the August edition of popular motorcycle magazine RiDE, here at Cornish Scoots we got to thinking about the products that we offer to you, our valued customer. In the Accessories > Security category we offer a range of quality security products for your motorcycle or scooter. We have products ranging in price from under £50 to over £600, including lock & chain sets, ground anchors and disc locks.

In the RiDE article they ask the question: “Is a £25 lock really any use?” – that is a very good question and one that many existing and new motorcycle owners will ask themselves. When choosing a device to protect your pride and joy, you want something that can offer a decent level of protection. But cost considerations also come into play.

The focus of the article in RiDE was, can a budget lock and chain set offer a comparable level of protection as a more expensive product. To that end two different products were chosen, one budget product costing £25 and one well known brand product costing £125.

Cornish Scoots was interested to note that the budget product quoted no approvals, whilst the branded product claimed the Thatcham Quality Assured rating. One thing to note is Thatcham no longer test aftermarket locks so whilst the product on test probably was tested historically, any new lock and chain products will not be able to claim to be Thatcham Quality Assured. Instead you should look for the Sold Secure approval (all of the security products we offer here at Cornish Scoots have Sold Secure approval).

We aren’t going to go into the nitty gritty of RiDE’s article and testing procedure (you’ll have to buy the magazine to view that!) but we will give away the end verdict: “Dearer locks protect for longer” – and that really is the crux of the matter. When locking up your bike you want to know that, should the scumbag thieves target your property, that the resistance they meet from your chosen security device will hinder them as much as possible.

As mentioned earlier, Cornish Scoots have a variety of top quality security products . We have chosen to sell products from Squire Locks and for good reason. Their products are Sold Secure rated and come with a 10 year manufacturer guarantee. When you buy a Squire product you can be sure you are buying quality, and giving those pesky thieves a much harder job than if you bought a generic (cheap) lock.

So the old adage really applies to motorcycle security – you get what you pay for. And here at Cornish Scoots, you can be assured that you are getting top quality products, at great prices too!
